Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen spoke on how our security forces will protect Singapore's sovereignty with professionalism and restraint.
He shared that the Police Coast Guard, Republic of Singapore Navy, and the Maritime Port Authority have every capability to compel Malaysian Government vessels to leave Singapore Territorial Waters. They have been exercising restraint to better enable constructive discussions and peaceful resolutions.
Minister Ng also spoke on the Johor Menteri Besar's provocative actions on 9 January 2019, which went against Malaysia's officially stated policy. Singapore's security agencies had detected the Johor Menteri Besar's movements early, and responded promptly with their own vessels.
He noted how tensions and risks increase with escalatory actions, such as the Johor Menteri Besar's incursion, and hoped that it would not result in unnecessary and regrettable incidents.
He spoke in Parliament on 15 January 2019.
